The New Zealand Shipping Company building

Staying in Ahuriri (where yesterdays photo was taken) and moving just down the road a bit there is  an interesting building.  Napier is well known for its Art Deco style in architecture.  This is one such building.  These days it is a restaurant.  The New Zealand Shipping Company was a shipping company whose ships ran passenger and cargo services between Great Britain and New Zealand between 1873 and 1973.  In 1882, the company's ships were equipped with refrigeration and a frozen meat service began from New Zealand to England.  I dont know how much was carried out from the building nor when this building was built and used.  However, I do have a photo (see link below) to suggest it was probably used for cargo before 1905.  Interesting too to me is that the wharf looks kind of similar these days.  I shall take a photo one day and show you.

  5. You really ought to see if there is a market for your pictures. Why not ask one of the people running your course.
